In complex divorce, financial and children matters the careful selection of an expert, or team of experts, can be crucial to the success of your case. Although not always necessary, Staffordshire Family Law Solicitors can put together a select team of experts from our tried and trusted panel to ensure that you get the best possible advice.
In financial matters it is sometimes necessary to obtain the specialist knowledge of a pension actuary when considering the benefits of any possible pension sharing order. It may be necessary to instruct a forensic accountant if your partner has complex personal or business assets that are difficult to quantify. There will be occasions where it is necessary to instruct a tax specialist who can ensure that a proposed settlement is structured in the most tax efficient way. You may also need the advice of your independent financial adviser who could advise you on how a potential settlement could work for you.
More commonly it may be necessary to obtain independent valuations of any properties that are owned. If this is the case we will ensure that a local surveyor with the right local knowledge is instructed to provide a report (suitable for the court if necessary), giving the property value which can be used to help reach an early agreement.
In very complex children law matters it may be necessary to instruct medical experts or obtain a report from a psychiatrist or psychologist. These types of reports are however very rare and would not normally be needed in most family disputes.
The most commonly used expert will be a specialist family barrister. In most cases it will not be necessary to instruct a barrister on your behalf and for continuity of service we undertake most of our own advocacy. However, there are certain circumstances where the use of the barrister can be a very effective tool. The decision to instruct a barrister will only be made with your involvement and after careful analysis of the benefits to be gained. As an example, we may sometimes use a barrister to provide an opinion as to a particular settlement in a very complex financial dispute. In this situation your solicitor and your barrister will work together to ensure that you are given the best advice.
Whatever type of expertise is used they will only be chosen from our list of approved experts and we will always match carefully the expert to your needs and available resources.
